I can’t fly!

A long, long time ago, Antarctica was not isolated from the rest of the world but linked to the continents above it, forming a large contingent of land mass.

Penguins roamed the land freely with little fear of predators. Soon they lost their ability to fly as they preferred to move on foot. The skies were more dangerous with birds of prey like eagles and falcons.

When Antarctica started to drift away, the penguins panicked. After so many generations, the birds had become flightless and were in danger of being stranded on one floating ice block. Many tried to swim across the ocean but few made it to the other side. Those which survived were immediately snapped up by the hungry Patakus*.

With little chance of leaving Antarctica, the penguins were resigned to their fate.

Until a few thousand years later, when one penguin would rise to overcome the odds.

A penguin, armed with only a Kalashnikov and a ham and cheese.

*Patakus are dog-like creatures which are excited by the white foam on waves as they hit the coastline. They exist only in the writer’s mind, of course.

**There is no scientific basis in any part of the above story.
