Editor’s Note Aug 2009

Aug 2009

Don’t ask me what happened during the last two months – I just couldn’t get to blogging. But people have been asking me for new posts, surprisingly, so here I am squeezing out my last literary juices.

In early June the annual E3 finally returned with a bang with some outstanding demonstrations from Microsoft. Not wanting to be biased here, but what the other two Japanese console makers offered seemed like mouse squeals compared to the thunder roar from the West. The 2nd half of 2009 looks like an exciting year for game releases so check out my picks for this year as publishers prepare for a big battle during the forthcoming holiday season, hoping not to be slayed by a certain mythical monster known as Modern Warfare 2.

And then there was the highly-anticipated Transformers 2 which was literally a mind-blowing experience. It wasn’t a good storyteller but in terms of the action, oh boy, you do have to give Michael Bay due credit. As a military enthusiast, never in my life have I been so entertained by a movie since Black Hawk Down.

July came and went with much to sulk about. Having turned down the opportunity to go to command school, I was posted to one of the oldest camps in the country to be an engineer. I’ll not divulge too much about my vocation but I would let you know that water is our 2nd home. That said, I had been, and still am, stoning around waiting to be posted out to a new place where I can actually do something as I had been put out of course due to a medical condition. It’s nothing too serious, not to worry, but it definitely affects my ability to undergo training. In fact, it’s the reason why I chose not to follow my previous ambition of getting into OCS. Here in this particular unit, well things are definitely different from Tekong and in some ways I do miss the life I had on that island. The atmosphere is mostly depressing, for starters.

It’s most upsetting to see friends moving on to university life and gaining new knowledge which is actually useful, while the most of us are still trapped in this system of conscription. Sometimes I do ask myself if I could actually have some interest in medicine, to escape this harsh reality. As usual, life continues on a pretty much monotonous pace while I look forward to a better posting in September where if fortunate enough I can actually stay out and pursue other interests, as well as a successful footballing season for Arsenal FC. Did I mention that I’m considering upgrading my graphics card next month?

All the best for the next four years or six, my friends!
