Editor’s Note April-May 2009

Apr-May 2009

I thought I wouldn’t be blogging here again ever since that fateful day on 13th April when I lost all privileges I used to enjoy as a civilian. But without any proper closure to this blog, and with so many thoughts filling my mind as I push through 9 weeks of basic military training, I guess keeping up the habit of writing prevents my brain from degenerating in the 2 years prior to university education.

At this point of writing, it is already the third week of May, and more importantly the end of my 6th week of training. Since enlistment I’ve made sure I have at least one delicious meal to fill my deprived stomach everytime I book out. Food is not that terrible on the other side, but definitely not something you would want to eat on a daily basis either. More on that in a special Three Green Lights featurette where I will be writing about my trip to Tokyo and Singapore vs Tekong food in separate entries. Check out the delicious dinners I’ve had with my family over the past few weekends as I try to recollect the memories.

Army life has taught me one thing – there is nowhere else like home. As a teenager who has been through many ups and downs with my parents, I’m proud to say that I love my parents, especially for everything that they’ve done for their only child. I’ve never missed home so much in my life, but this is part and parcel of a Singaporean man’s life and I just have to carry on the tradition. But my point is not just for the guys but for everyone – treasure your family because in times of trouble or when you just need someone to talk to, they are the ones you can count on most.

Final word: don’t take the good things in life for granted. If you only realise how much they mean to you when they’re gone, then it’s too late to even say goodbye.
